Toastmasters Meeting Recap 1-21-15

Hi Fellow Toastmasters,

We had a fun meeting Wednesday!

Sean served as Toastmaster, and Kim was our grammarian and ahhh-counter. She chose the word of the day out of our Word-Of-The-Day cards in the lectern:

Immutable: adjective

Unchanging over time or unable to be changed

“An immutable fact”.

Each speaker used the word except for Michelle! In fact Rich used the word several times. (we lost count) We should all try to use it at least once today.

Susanne gave a speech today from her Advance Communicator Bronze book. We heard a couple of amusing stories and the reasons why we all need life insurance! Michelle evaluated Susanne. She did a great job.

Heather was our Table Topics Master and Vote Counter. Rich, Michelle, Sean and Chris were given unusual colors we were to paint our homes and we had to explain WHY we wanted to paint our homes that color. Rich won the best speaker ribbon for his explanation why his daughter’s room was painted frog green.

Sean reviewed the CC and CL tracking spreadsheets with us and urged us to fill out our goals and accomplishments on them. We closed the meeting by filling out the Competent Leader and Competent Communicator tracking sheets and volunteering for roles for our next meeting. It will help us keep track of our goals. You can also fill them out yourself by using the below links.

Hi Fellow Toastmasters,

We had a small and abbreviated meeting today, due to the United Way Auction at the Steelcase Town Hall.

Michelle served as Toastmaster today. Heather was our Timer.

Susanne presented a speech today called A red fire of a long winter’s evening… This was a special occasion speech – Accepting an Award. Susan was presented with her CC and CL certificates today! Susanne was very thankful and appreciative to Toastmasters for her growth. Sean was the evaluator of her speech

Kelson gave his second speech in his Competent Communicator manual today, Organize your Thoughts. His speech was Thanksgiving, a time for Thankful Giving. He pointed out we have Thanksgiving on Thursday, Black Friday on Friday, plus Cyber Monday. He suggested we should all recognize a #Giving Tuesday where we share of our good fortune every year. Susanne was Kelson’s evaluator

A member biography sheet was presented to the members and they were asked to fill them out so we may start doing proper introductions of the speaker before their speeches.

Toastmaster meeting recap 11-19-14

Hi Fellow Toastmasters,

We had a small but informative meeting today.

Kelson served as Toastmaster today as well as our grammarian and ahhh-counter. Kelson picked the word Trepidation for our Word-Of-The-Day:

Trepidation: Noun

A feeling of fear or agitation about something that may happen.

“He had some trepidation about agreeing to their proposal”

It was a good word choice, because I’m pretty sure all who spoke used this word!

Sean presented a speech today called Stagetime, Stagetime, Stagetime! He used this speech to inspire us to use Toastmasters to the greatest extent we can. Thanks, Sean, for giving us a motivating speech!

Michelle was our Table Topics Master and Vote Counter. The topic was your favorite Snow Stories. Michelle shared with the group the story of her brother being stuck in a very deep snow drift during the blizzard of 1967. We all had something to share. Heather won the Table Topics with her observations about how snowstorms are so different when you are an adult opposed to when you’re a kid. (We liked it better when we were kids.)

Cameron returned for another visit this meeting. We hope to see him back next time. There was an announcement that we have a new member! Kim Woronko has joined our club. Welcome Kim!

Sean urged us to fill out our goals and accomplishments the CC and CL tracking sheets. You can fill them out yourself by using the below links.

Club Meeting Recap 11/5

Hi Fellow Toastmasters,

We had a fun meeting today; if you were not there, you missed an out-of-the-ordinary meeting!

Sean served as Toastmaster today.

Heather was our grammarian and ahhh-counter.  Since she filled in at the last minute, she was not able to choose a word of the day, so we picked one out of our Word-Of-The-Day cards in the lectern:

Insipid: adjective

Lacking vigor or interest

Lacking flavor

“Many artists continued to churn out insipid, shallow works.

I think Sean was the only one to use the word today!   If you used the word today and I didn’t catch it, please let me know!  We should all try to use it at least once today.

Ellen was our Table Topics Master and Vote Counter.  We had a new take on the topic today, since we did not have any speeches scheduled.  We had TWO people come to the front of the room and we had a small debate.  One person spoke in favor of one topic and the other in favor of another.  Then each had a 30-second rebuttal.  It was fun!  We laughed a lot over the topics.  Cats vs. Dogs, Superman vs. Batman, Romantic Comedies vs. Suspense/Thriller movies; and Coffee vs Tea.  Kelson won the best speaker ribbon for his topic of why Batman was better than Superman was.

We had two guests today, Cameron and Ryan.  We hope to see them back next time.  (I think we will)

Sean reviewed the CC and CL tracking spreadsheets with us and urged us to fill out our goals and accomplishments on them.  We closed the meeting by filling out the Competent Leader and Competent Communicator tracking sheets.  It will help us keep track of our goals.   You can also fill them out yourself by using the below links.

Steelcase Toastmasters,

We have a great opportunity coming up. Saturday, November 1st you are invited to attend the S Division Speech Contest. This will be a great learning opportunity and should be very entertaining. You’ll get to see winners from each Area Contest give their humorous speeches and table topics to compete for the S Division title.

For more information see the informational flyer (Toastmasters_SpeechContest.pdf) and I would encourage all of you to consider attending.

We also have a meeting scheduled for next week Wednesday at 11:30 in the Multipurpose Room at Steelcase. There are several roles to fill, so please check your Competent Leader manual and find out which role you need to take to finish your next project.

Feel free to sign up for that role on the club website: http://4172.toastmastersclubs.org/agenda.html

We also have room for one more speech. I would encourage you to look at your Competent Communication manual to see which speech is next for you, and sign up if you would like to knock out one more!

Toastmasters Meeting recap 10/15/14

Hi Fellow Toastmasters,

We had a wonderful meeting today; if you were not there you missed a wonderful speech by Sean Fahey and the evaluation was masterfully done by Lori.

Kelson served as Toastmaster today and did a wonderful job for his first time.

Ritu chose one of her favorite words for the word-of-the-day:

Moxie: noun

Energy, pep

Courage, determination

Know-how

The majority of the members used the word-of-the-day today! Good choice, Ritu! You’ve got moxie! It think it is one of my favorite words now too.

Ritu also was the Grammarian and Ah-Er Counter.

Rich was our Table Topics Master and Vote Counter. He had us play a variation of “Let’s Make a Deal” and we got to pick a topic from two different piles. Ritu won the best speaker ribbon for her topic of what her superpower would be if she was able to have a superpower. She chose to feed the world and not have anyone go hungry or thirsty.
